A Portrait of Charles Anderson Pelham, later Lord Yarborough, by John Hoppner, R.A. (1758-1810).

Oil on canvas, 75.5 x 63.5cm.

Charles Anderson Pelham (1781-1846) who became the Ist Earl of Yarborough in 1823, was an M.P. for Great Grimsby and for Lincolnshire.

He lived on the Isle of Wight and was the founder there of the Royal Yacht Squadron.

The portrait is a pair to that of his wife Sophia, by George Romney (1734-1802), PIC185.

John Hoppner trained at the Royal Academy, where he gained the highest award, a gold medal, for history painting.

Although his first love was landscape painting, he was successful, and became much sought after, in the more lucrative field of portraiture, commissioned exclusively by the wealthy, the fashionable and royalty.
