Painted for the Honourable Order of Little Bedlam; acquired circa 1688-90 by John Cecil, 5th Earl of Exeter, as a fellow member of the Little Bedlam Club. The greyhound, the Earl of Gainsborough’s animal avatar required for membership of the club, bears his name upon its collar.
