A Portrait of an Old Lady, by John Mansfield Crealock (1871-1959).

Oil on canvas, 99cm by 80cm. Signed l.r.: J. Crealock/1928.

The artist was the son of John North Crealock (1836-1895), and nephew of Henry Hope Crealock (1831-1891), two military brothers who were also talented artists.

Their archive of sketches and paintings provide an interesting record of military life in the heyday of the British colonial era, during the second half of the 19th Century.

After an early career in the Army, John Mansfield resigned and became a successful artist.
