The Irish born artist was a portraitist and miniature painter who exhibited widely at the Royal Academy, from the time of his arrival in London in 1795 until his death in 1833.

He also taught painting and had a considerable influence upon Regency culture.

He was much influenced himself by the Greek Revival, aspects of which were evident in his work and in his collecting.
