Ferdinand Bol was a Dutch artist who studied with Rembrandt (1606-1669) and whose work was much influenced by that of the master.
Like Rembrandt, he favoured historical subjects, portraits, often of figures in exotic clothes and self portraits.
Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723), who would become one of the leading portrait painters in England in the late 17th and early 18th Centuries, was one of his pupils.
