A Portrait of a Gentleman, English School, second half of the 17th Century.

Oil on canvas, oval, 73.7cm by 61cm.

The portrait has traditionally been considered to be of Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727).

One of the greatest scientists England has ever produced, Sir Isaac was born at Woolsthorpe Manor, some 30 miles north of Burghley.

An attribution to Antonio Verrio (1639-1707) has been suggested in the past.
