Peter Paillou was a British artist best known for his paintings of birds, many of which were used as book illustrations.

The painting was part of a substantial bequest from Lord and Lady Newlands to William, 5th Marquess of Exeter (1876-1956).

Lady Newlands was his aunt; a daughter of the 3rd Marquess and Marchioness of Exeter.
