The 1763 Burghley Inventory records: ‘The Japan Closet….a Landscape by Paul Brill.'(sic)
Born and trained in Antwerp, Paul Bril went to Rome in 1575 and became the leading landscape painter in the city.
He also did small cabinet paintings on copper, some of which he signed with a pair of glasses, in a pun on his name; bril meaning glasses in Flemish!
