It was part of the Whichcote Collection at Aswarby Park in Lincolnshire and came to Burghley through inheritance.
Isabella Whichcote, the only child of Sir Thomas Whichcote, 7th Bt., was the wife of Brownlow, 4th Marquess of Exeter (1849-1898).
