An Italian white marble bust of Silenus, late 17th Century.

The figure of Silenus is depicted looking down and draped with a trailing grape vine; mounted on a later black slate socle it is 61cm high overall and is probably Venetian.
The 1804 Burghley Inventory records: “Old Hall…4 do. busts Silenas, Bacchus, Ceres & a Bacchant”.
