An Italian white marble bust of Silenus, late 17th Century.

The figure of Silenus, which is probably Venetian, is depicted looking down and draped with a trailing grape vine.

It is mounted on a later black slate socle, 61cm high overall.

The 1804 Burghley Inventory records: ‘Old Hall…4 do. busts Silenas, Bacchus, Ceres & a Bacchant.’
