A Miniature of Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sevigné (1626-1696), School of Jean Petitot, circa 1660.

Enamel, oval 2.4cm, in a stained horn frame.

Madame de Sevigné was a French aristocrat famous for her wide, witty and lively correspondence, particularly that addressed to her daughter Francoise, to whom she was very close.

She is considered to be one of the greats of 17th Century French literature.

Jean Petitot (1607-1691) was a Swiss-born enamel painter who spent most of his working life at the courts of France and England.
