The Swiss born artist Angelica Kauffmann is perhaps best known for her history painting, although she was also an immensely skilled portrait painter and landscape artist. She had a highly successful career in both Rome and London, and in 1768 was one of two female founder members of the Royal Academy. Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter sat to her for his portrait in Naples in 1764 whilst on his first Grand Tour (PIC781) and subsequently became one of her patrons.
