Painted on ivory, rectangular, in a gilt-metal mount and frame, signed, inscribed and dated 1842 on the reverse; in a fitted maroon leather case, 7.5cm.
Lord Thomas Cecil was the younger brother of Brownlow, 2nd Marquess of Exeter (1795-1867). In 1838 he married Lady Sophia Lennox (1809-1902).

William Egley, despite the discouragement of his father and with no artistic training, eventually became an accomplished and much sought after miniaturist.
