Lady Sophia Cecil, wife of Lord Thomas Cecil, by William Egley.

Painted on ivory, rectangular, in a gilt-metal mount, signed, inscribed and dated 1842 on the reverse; in a fitted maroon leather case.
In 1838 Lady Sophia Cecil née Lennox (1809-1902), married Lord Thomas Cecil (1797-1873), the younger brother of Brownlow, 2nd Marquess of Exeter (1795-1867). The miniature appears to be a companion to that of Lord Thomas, painted by the same artist in 1842, (MIN0077).
William Egley (1798-1870), despite the discouragement of his father and with no artistic training, eventually became an accomplished and much sought after miniaturist.
