Oil on canvas, 127cm by 91.5cm. Signed J Wyck.
Jan Wyck who was born in Haarlem, moved to England in the 1660s, like many of his fellow countrymen.
He became best known for his military paintings, but often working under royal patronage, he also painted portraits, hunting scenes and landscapes.
The painting was part of a substantial bequest from Lord and Lady Newlands to William, 5th Marquess of Exeter (1876-1956).
Lady Newlands was his aunt; a daughter of the 3rd Marquess and Marchioness of Exeter.
