Isabella Clara Eugenia (1566-1633), Archduchess of Austria and Governor of the Netherlands, Continental School, later 17th Century.

On card, oval, in a turned wood frame, 9cm.
Isabella Clara Eugenia was the daughter of Philip II of Spain and his third wife Elizabeth of Valois. In 1599 she married her cousin Albert VII, Archduke of Austria and together they ruled the Spanish Netherlands from their Court in Brussels, in what has been recognised as a Golden Age; their Court becoming one of the great political and artistic centres of Europe. After Albert’s death she became Governor of the Netherlands, on behalf of the Spanish King, and later joined the Secular Franciscan Order as a nun.
