Isabella Clara Eugenia was the daughter of Philip II of Spain and his third wife Elizabeth of Valois.
In 1599 she married her cousin Albert VII, Archduke of Austria and together they ruled the Spanish Netherlands from their Court in Brussels.
Their Court became one of the great political and artistic centres of Europe, in what has been recognised as a Golden Age.
After Albert’s death in 1621, she became Governor of the Netherlands, on behalf of the Spanish King, and later joined the Secular Franciscan Order as a nun.
