Lord Burghley’s titanium hip.

In later life, Lord Burghley’s athletic exertions caused him to suffer terribly from arthritis.

In 1957, by then the 6th Marquess of Exeter, he had one of the first hip-replacement operations.

Ten years later, his hip was again replaced.

The first, titanium hip was silver-plated, embellished with the Exeter crest above the motto, ‘A loyal supporter, 1957-1967’ and subsequently placed as a mascot on the bonnet of Lord Exeter’s Rolls Royce.
