In later life, Lord Burghley’s athletic exertions caused him to suffer terribly from arthritis. In 1957 he had one of the first hip-replacement operations. Ten years later, his hip was again replaced. The first, titanium hip was silver-plated, embellished with the Exeter crest above the motto, “A loyal supporter, 1957-1967” and subsequently placed as a mascot on the bonnet of Lord Exeter’s Rolls Royce.
