Clovio, who was born in Croatia, was an illuminator, miniaturist and painter; considered to be the greatest illuminator of the Italian High Renaissance.
He is perhaps best known for his masterpiece, the Farnese Hours, which contains twenty-eight exquisite miniatures of mostly Old and New Testament scenes.
It was completed after nine years, in 1546, for his patron Cardinal Farnese in Rome.
