The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, by Girolamo da Treviso the Younger (1497-1544).

Oil on panel, 107cm by 126cm.

Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) acquired the painting from the Barberini Palace in Rome.

The 1763 Burghley Inventory records: ‘The picture room … Christ, virgin and St Catherine, Joseph old Parma.’

Girolamo da Treviso the Younger was both a sculptor and painter.

He worked in several Italian cities, including Bologna, Mantua and Genoa, absorbing the influences of both Giorgione (1477-1510) and Raphael (1483-1520).

He later travelled to England to work as a military engineer for Henry VIII, where he is also known to have painted.

In his role as engineer, he was killed by a cannon shot at the Siege of Boulogne in 1544.
