God the Father, by Giovanni Battista Benaschi (1636-1688).

Oil on canvas, a bozetto, 35.5cm by 45cm.

The artist, who was also a draughtsman and engraver, was born near to Turin.

At an early age, he moved to Rome, where he was much influenced by the work of Giovanni Lanfranco (1582-1647), which he closely imitated.

His work was further influenced by a period spent in Naples, where he eventually died.
