The painting was acquired by Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) who believed it to be by Nicolas Poussin.

The 1763 Burghley Inventory records, in the 9th Earl’s distinctive hand: ‘the dressing room … Venus & Cupids. By Nic Possen.’

Gimignani was an etcher and fresco painter, working mostly in Rome, where he is said to have worked with Poussin for a while.
