Painted on ivory, rectangular with an arched top, in a gilt-metal mount and frame, inscribed and dated 1848 on the reverse, 11.4cm.
In 1848, the year in which the miniature was painted, Lady Georgina Pakenham (1827-1909), a daughter of Thomas, 2nd Earl of Longford, married William Alleyne, Lord Burghley (1825-1895).
On the death of his father in 1867, Lord Burghley succeeded as 3rd Marquess of Exeter.
William Egley, despite the discouragement of his father, and with no artistic training, eventually became an accomplished and much sought after miniaturist.
