The painting, with its pair PIC606, was part of a bequest from James, 2nd Baron Newlands to William, 5th Marquess of Exeter (1876-1956).

Lord Newlands was married to Lord Exeter’s Aunt Mary, daughter of William Alleyne, 3rd Marquess of Exeter (1825-1895).
