Albani was born in Bologna, where he studied with the Flemish-born artist Denis Calvaert (1540-1619).
He was active in Bologna before moving to Rome where he became a principal assistant to Annibale Carracci (1560-1609), working on a series of fresco cycles in both private palazzi and religious buildings.
St. Sebastian was martyred in 288 during the persecution of Christians by the Emperor Diocletian.
