Four gouache sketches of prize dairy shorthorn cattle, 19th Century.

These recently discovered sketches show four of the famous prize-winning dairy shorthorn cattle bred by William Alleyne, 3rd Marquess of Exeter (1825-1895), on the Home Farm.

They are by Walter Ray Woods (1823-1902), painted in 1874, as preparatory works for his painting of Prize Cattle in the Grounds of Burghley, painted in the same year, (PIC775).
