Fortune embracing Prudence, by Pietro Liberi (1605-1687).

Oil on canvas, 95cm by 111cm.

The painting appears in the 1688 Burghley Inventory: ‘My Ladyes Dressing Roome….3 pictures over the doores, Ld Burghley pulling fortune, prudence and fortune and one embracing fortune.’

Liberi was one of the principal artists patronised by John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700), whilst on the Grand Tour.

His Steward, Culpepper Tanner, recorded the purchase of six canvases by Liberi whilst in Venice in 1684, including the one which featured the earl’s son and heir, Lord Burghley pulling Fortune by the hair, (PIC248).
