Christ and the Woman of Samaria, Circle of Ippolito Scarsella called lo Scarsellino 1550-1620).

Oil on canvas, 62.5cm by 48cm.

The story of Christ’s meeting with the Samaritan woman at a well comes from the New Testament Gospel of St. John.

Scarsellino, who was from Ferrara, worked exclusively in his native Italy, both as a panel and fresco painter.

He spent some time in Venice, where he is thought to have been a pupil of Paolo Veronese (1528-1588).
