Saint Matthew, attributed to Giovanni Antonio Burrini (1656-1727).

Oil on canvas, 74cm by 71cm.

Saint Matthew, a former tax collector, was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus and author of the first Gospel of the New Testament.

Burrini was a Bolognese artist and a founder member of the city’s Accademia Clementina.

He shared a studio with his great friend and fellow painter of the Bolognese School, Giuseppe Maria Crespi (1665-1747).

Burrini was active mainly in Bologna, although he worked for some time for a family from Turin.
