Gaulli was born in Genoa, then a lively artistic and commercial centre, where he would have met artists from all over Europe, including those from non Catholic countries.
Moving to Rome, he would later become one of the most important portrait painters of his time, although he is perhaps remembered most of all for his spectacular vault frescoes, particularly those in the Church of the Gesù in Rome.
