The painting was one of two by the artist, purchased by John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700), whilst on the Grand Tour, and which appear in the 1688 Burghley Inventory.
In the 1763 Inventory, his great grandson, Brownlow, the 9th Earl (1725-1793), records: ‘the North dressing room….two flower pieces by Louis Vagneer of Turrin.’ (sic). See PIC532.
