Envy plucking the Wings of Youth, by Pietro della Vecchia (1603-1678).

Oil on canvas, 89cm by 117cm.

Envy, depicted as an older, rather menacing figure, clutches at the newly-plucked feather of Youth, who pleads in vain.

The artist, from a well known Venetian family, was particularly interested in Venetian art of the previous century and was widely recognised amongst his contemporaries for his ability to imitate the style of the 16th Century masters.

He worked in many different genres and was also an art restorer, an art expert and a designer of cartoons for mosaics.
