Elizabeth Poyntz was the wife of William Stephen Poyntz of Cowdray and the sister and heiress of George, 8th Viscount Montagu (1769-1793), who drowned on the Rhine as a young man whilst travelling in Europe.
She was the mother of Isabella (1803-1879), wife of Brownlow, 2nd Marquess of Exeter (1795-1867), and on her death, Isabella
inherited many fine works of art which became part of the collections at Burghley.
The artist was one of the most fashionable miniaturists of the early 19th Century and was appointed miniature painter to Queen Victoria on her accession in 1837.
