A Miniature of Elizabeth Burrell (1757-1837), third wife of Henry, 1st Marquess of Exeter (1754-1804), by Miss Mary Mure.

Pencil and watercolour heightened with white, on paper, in a gilt gesso frame, 11.5cm. Circa 1800.

Elizabeth, daughter of Peter Burrell of Langley Park, Kent, married firstly Douglas, 8th Duke of Hamilton (d. 1799).

In 1800 she married Henry, 10th Earl of Exeter, who the following year became the 1st Marquess.

A pair of miniatures in the Northumberland Collection represent the sitter’s parents.

They had two other daughters, Isabella, the wife of Algernon, 1st Earl of Beverley, and Frances, the wife of the 2nd Duke of Northumberland and mother of the 3rd and 4th Dukes.
