Pen and brown ink and grey wash, 37cm by 28.5cm.
Inscribed beneath in the distinctive hand of Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793): Obelisk in the Middle Court at Burghley.
The treatment of this drawing of the obelisk, which sits above the beautiful Renaissance entrance to the House from the central courtyard, suggests that it may be by either Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown or, more probably, the Stamford architect William Daniel Legg, both of whom worked extensively for the 9th Earl.
