Oil on panel, 26.5cm by 18.5cm.
Inscribed on the reverse D.M. DOM/(MONNA?)/158?.
The little known Mona initially decided to become a cloistered monk.
Later however, he left the monastery to work with his godfather, the painter Giuseppe Mazzuoli (c1536-1589), who was active mainly at the court of Alfonso II d’Este, of Ferrara.
Mona painted prolifically in Ferrara, but his uncertain and fiery temper eventually made it necessary for him to flee to Bologna, and later to Parma after he attacked a papal legate.
This is thought to be his only work in this country.
