Design for a rococo Chamber Organ, English School, circa 1750.

Pen and brown ink over pencil with brown wash on laid paper, 38cm by 25.5cm.

Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) had a great love of music.

He formed a fine music library at Burghley and commissioned musical instruments, in particular an organ by William Gray in 1790 and possibly a square piano by Longman and Broderup circa 1789.

It is tempting to speculate that this design may have been made for him.
