A Design for a Garden Seat round a Tree, English School, early 19th Century.

Pen and brown ink and watercolour on woven paper, 50cm by 36cm.

It is thought that the plan for the garden seat was originally drawn up with a view to encircling the chestnut tree in the Chestnut Courtyard at Burghley.

It had however, apparently never been acted upon, until in 2015 the design was used for the seat which now surrounds the young sweet chestnut tree in the courtyard.

It was made in memory of a much loved and respected former employee.

The oak used for the seat came from a tree which had grown to the south of the House.

It was giving cause for concern and had to be felled.
