Oil on canvas, 83.8cm by 69.2cm.
Signed on the reverse: ‘Angelica Kauffman pinxt Ano 1764 at Naples’, and inscribed on a label on the reverse: ‘David Garrick Esqre painted at Naples 1764 by Angelica Kauffman.’
David Garrick was an English actor, playwright, theatre manager and producer who had a profound influence on theatrical practice in the 18th Century.
This portrait was painted in Naples in the same year as the Kauffman portrait of Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793), standing before Vesuvius (PIC781).
The earl was one of the principal patrons of the gifted young Swiss-born artist who was one of two female founder members of the Royal Academy in 1768.
