Oil on canvas, 101cm by 74.9cm.
Signed l.l.: Oswald Birley/1926.
The portrait, showing David Cecil, Lord Burghley as a Cambridge Blue, was a gift to him from the town of Stamford to mark his 21st birthday.
He enjoyed an illustrious athletics career, both at Cambridge and thereafter, winning a gold medal at the Amsterdam Olympic Games in 1928 and silver four years later in Los Angeles.
He succeeded his father as 6th Marquess of Exeter in 1956, continuing a lifelong interest in, and association with, amateur athletics.
The artist was a noted royal and society portrait painter of the early 20th Century.
