Captain Hoggins was a soldier and brother of Sarah Hoggins, who married Henry, 10th Earl, and later 1st Marquess of Exeter (1754-1804), as his second wife.
She died in 1797, before her husband’s elevation to the marquessate and as a result of her relatively humble background, she became known as ‘the Cottage Countess.’
