A Miniature of Brownlow, 2nd Marquess of Exeter, KG (1795-1867) and his eldest daughter, Lady Mary Frances Cecil, by Henry Pierce Bone (1779-1855).

Enamel, on copper, rectangular in a gilt-metal mount and frame, 14.3cm high.

The miniature is signed, inscribed ‘Painted from life’ and dated 1836 on the reverse.

The Marquess is shown wearing the sash and jewelled star of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, to which he was appointed in March 1827.

He is affectionately posed with his prettily attired daughter Mary (1832-1917), who stands at his side.

Henry Pierce Bone trained with his father, the noted enamel painter Henry Bone (1755-1834). He later worked for some years in oils, but reverted to enamels and became enamel painter to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
