The Assumption of the Virgin, Bolognese School, 17th Century.

Oil on canvas, 82.5cm by 70cm.

It has been suggested that the painting may be attributed to the circle of Carlo Cignani (1628-1719).

Cignani, who was born in Bologna, was greatly influenced by the refined work of Correggio (1489-1534).

He is thus said to have developped a more gentle style of painting than that usually associated with the Bolognese School.
