This painting was bought by Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) from the collection of the Zambeccari Palace in Bologna.
The 1763 Burghley Inventory records: ‘The picture room…The virgin, our saviour and st John by Ludvico caracci.'(sic)
Schedoni worked mainly in Modena, where he was born and Parma, where he died. His later works show the influence of Ludovico Caracci (1555-1619).
