Lauri was born in Rome but was of Flemish origin.
He specialised mainly in small-sized cabinet pictures of religious and mythological subjects.
John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700) purchased at least ten of his works, which remain in the Burghley Collection.
This painting is listed in the 1763 Burghley Inventory as: ‘The Japan Closet….the sun rising, Phillipo Laura.’
