A Portrait of Anne, Countess of Exeter (1649-1703) by Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680).

Oil on canvas, 120.7cm by 94cm. Inscribed with the identity of the sitter. A pair to PIC391.

The 1688 Burghley Inventory records: ‘The Marble Salloon Roome 2 My Lords picture my Ladys picture, by Sr Peter Lilly.’

Anne Cavendish was the only daughter of the 3rd Earl and Countess of Devonshire and when she married John, Lord Burghley in 1670, she brought a great fortune to Burghley.

Her husband became the 5th Earl of Exeter in 1678 and together, they made major alterations to the interiors of the Elizabethan house.

They also amassed a wonderful collection of works of art, acquired mainly during the course of extensive Grand Tours on the Continent.

A major inheritance from her mother in 1690, which is listed in the 1690 Devonshire Schedule, or Deed of Gift, further greatly enriched the Burghley Collections.
