1688 Inventory: The Marble Salloon Roome 2 My Lords picture my Ladys picture, by Sr Peter Lilly.

Anne Cavendish was the only daughter of the 3rd Earl and Countess of Devonshire. When she married John, Lord Burghley in 1670, she brought a great fortune to Burghley. Her husband became the 5th Earl of Exeter in 1678 and together, they made major alterations to the interiors of the Elizabethan house and amassed a wonderful collection of works of art, acquired mainly during the course of extensive Grand Tours on the Continent. A major inheritance from her mother in 1690 further greatly enriched the Burghley Collections.
