The cover is of Indian embroidered silk on a silver ground, with an overall design of stylised carnations and curling fern-like leaves interspersed with small quatrefoils, 201cm x 132cm x 42cm.
The 1867 Burghley Inventory records: ‘The fifth George Room … A large square centre ottoman covered in finely embroidered silk.’
Delhi was a centre for the manufacture of such fine textiles at the time.
