The bowl is 9.6cm. in height and 19.2cm. in diameter. The exterior is painted in underglaze blue with a continuous scene of a busy waterway, with European and Levantine trading vessels, and a fortified wall; a similar scene appears in the interior, within an octagonal reserve. The base has three spur marks and the six character mark of the Ming Emperor Chenghua (1447-1487). The Chinese Chenghua mark was frequently used on Japanese porcelain.
