An octagonal Arita bowl, late 17th/early 18th Century.

The exterior of the bowl is painted in underglaze blue with a continuous scene of a busy waterway, with European and Levantine trading vessels, and a fortified wall.

A similar scene appears in the interior, within an octagonal reserve.

The base has three spur marks and the six character mark of the Ming Emperor Chenghua (1447-1487).

The Chinese Chenghua mark was frequently used on Japanese porcelain.
