An ivory carved snuff bottle, Chinese, Qianlong (1736-1795).

The bottle, of flattened form, is carved overall with a scene depicting a lohan, (an original follower of the Buddha), wrestling with a dragon, in a contest for the ‘flaming pearl’.

The contest is watched by the remaining seventeen lohan, depicted on a ground of waves and rocks.

It carries the seal mark of Qianlong and is thought to have been made in the Beijing Palace Workshops which demanded the finest craftsmen from all over China, 7.6cm.
