An ivory carved snuff bottle, Japanese, 1920-1950.

The bottle, from Kyoto, is in the form of a lady seated on a ram; her head forming the stopper, 8cm.

This snuff bottle is one of a very few Japanese and Korean examples included in a large collection of almost four hundred Chinese bottles bought by David, 6th Marquess of Exeter (1905-1981) in the 1940s.

The collection was formed by Doctor Charles Martin, over a period of almost forty years, whilst working as a medical practioner in China.
