An ivory and dark brown lacquer snuff bottle, Japanese, 1750-1795.

The bottle depicts, on one side, a lady in a boat with two attendants and on the other, a lady on a veranda; it has the  seal mark of Qianlong (1736-1795), 6.2cm.

This snuff bottle is one of a very few Japanese and Korean examples included in a large collection of almost four hundred Chinese bottles bought by David, 6th Marquess of Exeter (1905-1981) in the 1940s.

The collection was formed by Doctor Charles Martin, over a period of almost forty years, whilst working as a medical practioner in China.
